August 2025
International Overdose Awareness Day is held annually on August 31st.
While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) reports a decline in overdose deaths since 2020, it remains the leading cause of deaths for adults in the US aged 18-44. One reason for the decline is wider access to Naloxone. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health offers free virtual naloxone trainings twice a month and attendees receive a naloxone kit. For more information, call the Naloxone Training Line at 410-222-1937, Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM ET. The Department of Health also maintains Health-to-Go vending machines in locations throughout the county. Naloxone and other health items are available at no cost in the machines which allows people to access the drug without having to interact with anyone else .

August is also the beginning of the new school year. Mental Health America has issued a toolkit, Back to School with Mental Health in Mind. This toolkit includes resources for students, parents and caregivers, and educators including printable resources, webinars, and an anonymous youth mental health test.
